Terminology at the service of the characterisation of funerary practices: the Pactols thesaurus—abridged version

The reorganization of the Pactols thesaurus aims in particular to update the categories and lexicon according to recent archaeological findings and methods. Anthropologists and archaeologists of funerary and mortuary practices have revised, between 2019 and 2021, the 140 concepts in the “Death” section. Two iterative approaches have been adopted. One specifies the meaning of the concept, its heading, its definition and any rejected labels. The other repositions the concept with relevant ones in other categories (structures, grave goods, funerary practices) with its dependent and associated terms. Beyond the updating of the thesaurus itself, this revision has enabled an essential discussion of the notions relating to funerary practices and their interaction in different spatiotemporal scales and archaeological contexts. This article presents, through selected examples, how the approach adopted contributes to a better characterization of funerary practices in Late Antiquity.
La réorganisation du thésaurus Pactols vise en particulier à mettre à jour les catégories et le lexique suivant les découvertes et méthodes récentes de l'archéologie. Des anthropologues et archéologues des pratiques funéraires et mortuaires ont conduit, entre 2019 et 2021, la révision des 140 concepts du domaine « Mort ». Deux démarches itératives ont été adoptées. L'une précise le sens du concept, son intitulé, sa définition, ses formes rejetées. L'autre repositionne le concept dans de nouvelles branches (constructions, mobiliers, pratiques funéraires) avec ses termes dépendants et associés. Au-delà de la mise à jour du thésaurus lui-même, cette révision a permis une discussion essentielle des notions relatives aux pratiques funéraires et à leur confrontation dans des échelles spatio-temporelles et des contextes archéologiques différents. Cet article présente, par des exemples choisis, comment la démarche adoptée contribue à une meilleure caractérisation des pratiques funéraires de l'Antiquité tardive.

1The Pactols thesaurus is a multilingual, hierarchical, controlled vocabulary for use in archaeology. The thesaurus was reorganized to update the categories and the lexicon to reflect recent archaeological discoveries and methods (Nouvel 2017). Anthropologists and archaeologists of funerary and mortuary practices revised the 140 concepts in the “Death” section between 2019 and 2021. Two iterative approaches were used. The first concerned the meaning of the concept: its heading, its definition, any rejected labels. Certain obsolete concepts were deprecated in favour of others regarding to recent research developments. The second approach involved putting the concept with related ones in other categories (structures, grave goods, funerary practices).
2The examples presented here have been selected for their relevance to the theme of the symposium: grave, ossuary, paleo-Christian, inhumation. We outline the elements of the discussion for each concept, based on the literature (for example, Blaizot 2009; Boulestin, Duday 2005; Boulestin 2012; Leclerc, Tarrête 1988; Zemour 2016) and on the participants’ experience. Thus, “burial” was considered alongside “tomb” and “human remains”; “ossuary” was polysemic, with two different forms distinguished; the absence of “inhumation” in the lexicon, in contrast to “cremation,” revealed an error “by default” that was corrected. For these concepts, discussion led to agreement of a definition and its (re)positioning in the thesaurus. The term “paleo-Christian” was ultimately discarded for the reasons described.
3This approach contributes to an improved understanding of funerary practices in Late Antiquity. More broadly, the project provided a platform for essential discussion about the concepts related to these practices and how to deal with them in different spatiotemporal scales and archaeological contexts. The work must be continued with a translation of the terms, representing a large-scale scientific challenge. The revision and standardization of the vocabulary should enable greater understanding between researchers, improve the transmission of data, and promote good practice.
