6.1. Preliminary Observations on Vasiliki and Mottled Wares at EM IIB Sissi

1During the 2015 excavations of the area on the upper terrace to the north-west of the Central Court in Zone II (see §5.3), levels dating to E (arly) M (inoan) IIB (ca. 2450-2200 BC) were discovered in several spaces (11.1, 11.4, 11.8 and 11.9). In particular, a homogeneous deposit in Room 11.1 provided a large quantity of pottery that is comparable to that of EM IIB contexts at Malia, Vasiliki and Myrtos-Phournou Koriphi (henceforth Myrtos). Most of the pottery belongs to vases that have a mottled surface, which are produced both in the well-known Vasiliki ware and in a ware that imitates it, i.e. the Mottled ware (also known as Pseudo-Vasiliki ware).
2In this chapter, I first present the characteristics of Vasiliki and Mottled wares on the island before underlining the distinctive features of the local Mottled ware as encountered in the EM IIB deposit of Room 11.1, comparing it with original Vasiliki ware as well as with the Mottled ware attested at nearby Malia.
