1Though these plates of mushrooms only represent a small part of Claude Aubriet’s complete works, they are of the utmost importance to the history of mycological illustration. Aubriet improved the realism of the representations and contributed to increasing the preeminent role of illustration in the research work of scholars (such as Antoine de Jussieu). It is a fact that the history of mycology rarely remembered the name of Aubriet, but his contribution (always discreet, as the man, and a little bit “secret”, like his life) was essential; he opened the way for other artists like Henri-Joseph Redouté (1766-1852) who put together a compendium of mushrooms for the Parisian countryside at the end of the 18th century62. And he executed a set of mycological illustrations that would be kept in the Jussieu collection for almost a century and were studied by Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu and used by other scholars as comparative plates.
2The unpublished plates that we are presenting in this book are a precious testimony. They are a testimony, first, to Aubriet’s art, which is usually only known for his illustrations of plants, and, secondly, a testimony to a pivotal time in the understanding and the study of mushrooms. We usually consider Micheli’s Nova plantarum genera (1729) as mycology’s gateway to its “modern” era when further research in microscopy started, which enabled a more refined knowledge and recognition of the characters that helped in the creation of a strong systematic. It is exactly during this time that Claude Aubriet created this magnificent compendium of mushrooms in color…
