1Caspar Friedrich Wolff1 graduated as a doctor in Halle in 1759. His thesis titled Dissertatio sistens theoriam generationis2 was based on experiments in embryology. Wolff indicated that he observed vessels from the beginning of development, forming what was called the “venous valves”, as if molecules traced a path in the yolk membrane. He observed that these venous valves existed before the heart was visible. He concluded that the motion was independent of the action of the heart and that this action was not the only driver of the development of the fetus. He thought that the vessels were formed as the small passages of globules, the first elements of blood, were shrouded and the heart only formed when the blood became red. Thereafter, contraction appeared in the heart and the embryo acquired its animal nature. He claimed also that veins appeared wherever there were arteries for a mechanical reason because blood molecules had to go back to their departing point.
