1My utmost consideration goes to my supervisor Professor Riccardo Bocco for his knowledge, guidance and patience throughout the achievement of this work. 2The nature of my research quickly necessitated that I do some fieldwork. I would like to thank the Commission for Research Partnerships with Developing Countries (KFPE) for funding my trip and my stay in Lebanon for six weeks in March-April 2009, without which an important part of this work would not have been conducted. I would also like to thank the French Institute of the Middle East (IFPO), my research partner institution, for the valuable help provided in Beirut.
3Before leaving for Lebanon, I started collecting contacts in order to organize meetings and interviews. 5Once in Beirut, unexpected and unparalleled help came from, of all places, Australia: many thanks to Saad Saab and the “shababs,” I hope they will keep getting fresh air there! Thanks to Ms. May ‘Akl, the Free Patriotic Movement’s (FPM) link to the western media, who put me in contact with Dr. Pierre Raffoul, the FPM General Coordinator, whom I met in Eastern Beirut. Special thanks to Dr. Raffoul, who then allowed me to meet General Michel Aoun in Rabieh.
6Thanks also to Frédéric Domont, who introduced me to Walid Charara and put me in contact with Alain Aoun, member of the FPM political bureau, whom I later met in Dékouané. Professor Fawwaz Traboulsi received me at the American University of Beirut and led me to Shadi Mrad, an FPM Executive Committee member, formerly responsible for overseeing student activities. Sandrine Gamblin, senior analyst at the International Crisis Group, kindly shared her views about my research in Gemmayzé, Beirut. I met Karam Karam, political analyst at the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies, who kindly gave up some of his time to meet with me at the IFPO in Beirut.
7I would like to thank Mr. Labib Nassif for receiving me at the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP) headquarters. Mr. Nassif introduced me to Mr. Toufik Mouhanna, SSNP Member of the Higher Council, Vice President of the Political Bureau.
8I met Heiko Wimmen from the Heinrich Böll Foundation at his office in Gemmayzé, and tasted his perfect Turkish coffee. In Sin-el-Fil, I met Zyad Al-Abs, member of the FPM Political Bureau and Member of the Debate Committee. Mr. Paul Salem of the Carnegie Endowment received me in downtown Beirut. In Ashrafieh, Mr. Mayné’s kindness led me to Elie Thouny, FPM member of Haret Hreik Municipality Council, in Beirut’s southern suburb. The openness of three FPM members resulted in a frank and unexpected discussion in Amshit (Byblos) at the local FPM office.
