1This volume comes out of a research seminar entitled 'Leadership and Succession in Elite Contexts' that took place at the Palace of Fronteira, Lisbon, in October 1997. It was only made possible due to the support of the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon. To this, we were fortunate to add the support of the Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento, whose interest in our project allowed us to transform it into a genuinely international event; and the good luck of finding the support of Dr Fernando de Mascarenhas, the present Marquis of Fronteira, who took on our project with the grand hospitality and intellectual refinement for which he has become famed. Apart from these three organizing bodies, we must also express our gratitude for the generous support of the Ministry of Science and Technology, of the Universidade Atlântica and of Grafismos - whose director, Luis Martins, offered his skills when we most needed them.
